Toraja Cooking Class

Discover how to cook traditional Toraja fare the local Population way.  This unique learning adventure involves a visit to a traditional Toraja market to select the key ingredients you will need for your private cooking lesson with a local family. We will pick up fresh herbs & spices, crispy vegetables and everything that is required for the activity.

Then we will go, by car, to a traditional village  off the beaten tourist track.

Arrival and warmly welcomed by the local family. Our guide will introduce us the family that will show us how to prepare traditional Toraja food and will help us to discover how to create our own delicious authentic Toraja dish.

We will be around two hours preparing the traditional dishes with the local family. Then we will eat what we have prepared in the Lumbung or Alang Alang ( barn where the locals usually eat).

After lunch  we will do a soft trekking, passing rice fields and bamboo forests, heading Tempangallo Tombs. Here we will have the chance to see the ancient Erong and stone tombs. Then transfer back to the hotel.

Tana Toraja region gastronomy is different from the rest of Indonesia. Toraja is known for Papiong and Pamarasan. Papiong is fish or meat (chicken, pork of buffalo meat) roasted in a bamboo tube mixed with Toraja spices. Pamarasan is meat cooked with Pangi fruit meat, and when served the soup and meat turn black as the essence of Pangi fruit is dissolved.

In Toraja three different kind of rice can be found: red, black or white rice. We recommend you to taste all of them.
