A trip to Sulawesi is always a good eco-friendly travel.  Sulawesi is one of Indonesia’s most fascinating Island. In  South Sulawesi you will discover Tana Toraja Region, its customs, traditions and ancient culture.  The i island offers the traveller surprising landscapes, mountains about 3.000 metres high, deep canyons and crystalline lakes in the high lands.

In Bira, you will have the opprotunity to discover the fisher villages and its traditions.  And you will be surprised for the exoticism of its white sand beach and underwater world!

DAY 1  ARRIVE TORAJA – LEMO – KETE KETU - RANTEPAO

Arrival at Tana Toraja Airport. We will take a Lunch at Local Resto in Sangala area and the we will visit the stone grave In Lemo village, and then we will head to Keke Kesu Village, to see the traditional Tongkonan Houses. Then we will go directly to our hotel. Overnight.

DAY 2 MEET THE TORAJAN
Today we will visit Tana Toraja Region. Toraja Region is not only privileged for its wonderful landscape, but for its active and strange local culture. Even though nowadays its religion is mostly Christian, the animism religion is still alive. They still live according to their original animism religion called Aluk Todolo. 

We will visit its traditional villages and we will be able to appreciate the curious hulled ship shape of the Toraja traditional houses called Tongkonan, the stone graves and the  Tau-Tau (wood effigies representing the deceased), high up a rock. We will also visit its colorful markets, as the Toraja make their transactions and shopping every day.

If during the stay we have the opportunity to see a ceremony, the family will invite is to assist and we will see the fascinating ritual that a Toraja funeral is.

DAY 3 BATUTUMONGA WALK  - RANTEPAO

After breakfast we will visit the old megaliths in Bori Village, and also the traditional village of Palawa with lots of Tongkonan and Alangs aligned from north to South. After we will heading to Batutumonga where we will see the spectacular Panorama of Toraja Valley. Lunch time. After Lunch we will easy walk down for 2hours to Tikala Village. During this walk we’ll see the beautiful Toraja rice terraces, and traditional houses. In Tikala our driver will take us to Rantepao. Overnight in our Hotel.

DAY 4 TORAJA – SENGKANG (TEMPE LAKE)

After breakfast, heading Est, depart to the village of Sengkang, in Bugis’ territory.  After lunch, by canoe visit to the Tempe Lake, where the Bugis fishing community live. They have floating houses in the center of the Lake. They only leave their houses to trade. We will visit their floating house and will enjoy their hospitality having a tea with them. Accommodation in Sengkang.

DAY 5  SENGKANG – BIRA BEACH

After breakfast, heading south, to Cape Bira. During this journey we will visit the Bugis’ villages of the region, sugar and cacao plantations and the rice fields.  At midday, we will get Bira. After lunch, we will have time to enjoy the beach. Accommodation in Bira.

DAY 6  GUIDED TOUR TO LIUKAN ISLAND– TANA BERU
After having breakfast, we will take a boat of the local fishermen to go to the nearby island of Liukan where we can enjoy its coralline environment; we will see (snorkelling) corals and a lot of fishes. Then, in the island, we will visit the fishing community of “konjo” that lives there. They are well known by its hand weaving popular called “ikat”. Before return to Bira, we will have time to relax in the idyllic beach of Liukan

In the afternoon, we will visit the village of Tana Beru, where hand wood ships (phinisí) are still made.  We will see the shipyard and the town just located behind them. Next, we will come back to Bira to have dinner and sleep.

DAY 7 BIRA – MAKASSAR - OUT

After breakfast, we will depart to Makassar, capital of Sulawesi Island, to take the flight to the next destination. See you soon!
